Hospitality SWAPs: A New Era For Workforce Training

The UK hospitality sector is set to benefit from a major expansion of the Sector-based Work Academies Programmes (SWAPs), with the Government increasing available places from 80,000 to 100,000 over the next financial year. This expansion signals a significant investment in hospitality training and job creation, helping to bridge the gap between jobseekers and employers in need of skilled staff.

What is a Hospitality SWAP?

A hospitality SWAP is a structured, pre-employment training programme designed to equip jobseekers with the essential skills and experience they need to secure a role in the hospitality industry. The programme spans 20 days, including:

•           10 days of training in a hospitality setting or classroom with an industry tutor.

•           5 days of work experience with an employer offering apprenticeship or entry-level vacancies.

•           An introduction to hospitality career pathways and apprenticeships, ensuring participants understand progression opportunities within the sector.

•           Training in customer service, essential employment skills, health, hygiene, and safe working practices.

This initiative aligns with the level 2 apprenticeship standards, ensuring that participants gain valuable knowledge, skills, and behaviours (KSBs) required for long-term success in hospitality roles.

The Impact and Success of SWAPs

The Government’s commitment to expanding hospitality SWAPs follows the success of pilot programmes run by UKHospitality. Research from these pilot schemes has shown:

•           An 85% completion rate among participants.

•           80% of those completing the programme secured employment in the hospitality industry.

Additionally, this initiative supports the development of the Hospitality Skills Passport, a transferrable award that team members can earn to showcase their competence and qualifications—eliminating unnecessary training duplication for employers and employees alike.

What’s Next & How to Get Involved

The expansion of hospitality SWAPs will begin in April, bringing together employers, jobseekers, and the JobCentre network to ensure a steady pipeline of trained workers ready to enter the sector. This is a crucial development at a time when hospitality businesses are seeking skilled staff to support growth and recovery.
